virus hunt

my own PC is virus protected by norton 06-but my mate who recently bought a quality laptop with norton protection had to take it back when it started to slow down. The engineer who looked at it said there was a virus in it,which he removed and advised that norton did not give adequate protection against this, before removing and replacing with a better protection free of charge.
My mate said he watched while the engineer scanned the PC without using norton or exterior software to find rogue virus's, etc-is there any way I can try this myself?

bookmarking as intrigued by the question

how do you know that the engineer did NOT use an external source to check for viruses?

of interest, Norton is considered by many to be a resourse hogger

there are sites to use for on line scanners if you would like that?

do you think you might be infected?
