Hi..hope someone can help.
Just recently when I use the usb port on PC (eg for external hard drive and memory card reader) my PC often crashes. It only seems to have started when I bought new card reader a few weeks ago. But it is now happening with the ext hard drive that I've just purchased.
I can copy single folders etc to ext hard drive with no problem, but when trying to back up whole of internal hard disk(with Acronis Home Image) it crashes before even doing 1%.
Is there some way i can check what's happening? I've got Avast loaded and use Ad-Aware regularly.
Sorry this is so long.
Thanks....Boueur

Are you using a USB Hub?

Check the Event Viewer in Administrative tools to see what errors are recorded for the problem you are having. The even viewer is in Control Panel/Administrative Tools.

Thanks MCE2KS...I've been using the individual usb slots on front of PC so haven't used a hub.
There are 2 slots and have used both thinking that problem might have been in one.

Hi Recap..thanks for responding.
Did as you suggested -never realised this data existed!
From the Log there are a number of things: the "device\Device\Harddisk0\D has a bad block"
"Error detected on device\Device\Harddisk 1\D during a paging operation"
Not sure whether these refer to internal hard disk or external one?
It's also given some error codes at different parameters (which means nothing to me!)
Do any of these make any sense?
Cheers

Not a virus I'm certain.

Bad Block suggests an unreadable block of data, and couples this with references to HD 0 (usually C:) and HD D ....
Though whether that is a USB drive or another HD?

In the past scandisk and chkdisk have been used by those who know what they are doing and dependant on which version of Windows?

I hope some guru will come up with cunning plan for you!

Can you post the Event ID and Source for the errors may then be able to find a resolve?

I've copied eveny log when last crashed. Again i was trying to copy data to an external harddisk.

As per Microsoft: "The device has a bad block of memory, which Windows attempted to read. The data might be missing or corrupted". See the link to "EventID 7 from source Cdrom" for details on this event.
