Virus Grabber?

A Windows 98 PC keeps attracting certain viruses. Running Sophos AV shows affected files as: alevir.exe, alevir.exec, marco!.scr, Brasil.pif, Brasil.exe, scrsvr.exe and instit.bat. Sophos successfully deletes the files and the PC is "clean" of viruses.

The PC remains "clean" as long as it is not connected to the internet. However, as soon as a connection is established it seems as though the viruses are pulled in again.

I have loaded Sygate Firewall to see what programs are accessing the internet and the viruses do NOT come in as long as the Firewall is loaded - even though I have not excluded any programs from accessing the outside world! Without the Firewall being loaded they all come back in.

The dial-up connection monitor in the System Tray shows that there is unexpected traffic activity as they viruses are presumably downloaded.

Any ideas what this is please?
