Can anyone recommend - "from their own experience"
a suitable removal tool

I've already Searched Google and here. Lots there and 1 here.

This can be hard to remove completely. There are tools which can get rid of it, but there is usually some tidying up to do afterwards. In most cases, it also carries other infections.

I recommend that you download HijackThis from: click here

Run a scan and post the log on Malware Removal forum: click here

download VundoFix click here to your desktop.
Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

This program should remove it, if you prefer to sort it out yourself (but I still recommend that you get help):

- Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop from: click here
- Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
- Click the Scan for Vundo button.
- Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
- You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
- Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
- When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
It will create a report named vundofix.txt on your main drive (C:\vundofix.txt)
Note: It is possible that VundoFix may encounter a file it cannot remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot. Simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

I suggest that you run it several times. Get at least two consecutive clean reports.

It finds nothing.

However, Spybot keeps coming up with Virtumonde as being irremovable even when I try in Safe Mode.

Maybe it's a false report.

I shall carry on looking

What is Spybot actually finding? Does it give you a file name?
