VirtualBox - How To Find External Drives?

I use VirtualBox successfully on XP & W7 host OS's. Guest OS's are various Windows and a whole range of Linux Distros.

Whatever guest system I'm on I don't know how to get it to recognise any USB or CD/DVD drive. The VB Help on the subject is too complicated for me.

Can anybody help? Many thanks ..........

Thanks .......'Settings' is greyed out whether the guest OS is running or in the saved state ...

Thanks. I’m making some progress. I rarely use the power-off since it sometimes causes a loss of the OS. I can re-boot from within if necessary then usually save the m/c state.
I powered off (Mandriva – host W7) & sure enough I got into the Settings. I enabled the USB Controller. For the CD/DVD there was only 10 APIC & EFI to be enabled – so I enabled them. The OS failed to boot with no end of error messages so I removed the enabling ticks & then booted up ok.

…… some experimentation with the other OS’s will be the next job … Cheers
