Viewing blu-ray discs on VGA monitor

Hello. I have a computer with a blu-ray drive and appropriate software, but my monitor only has a VGA input. I bought a boxed set of a TV program on blu-ray, but I can't play it. It seems that they won't play unless there's a digital output available (HDMI or DVI). My graphics card has an HDMI output, but how can I use that to input to a VGA monitor? There are many HDMI/VGA cables around, but it's assumed that they will be used to play a VGA output to an HDMI input for a TV. Customer reviews (Amazon) are mixed. I want to go the other way, i.e. watch an HDMI output on a VGA input monitor. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks.
