Video/DVD Compression info required

I am just trying to find out what would I need to produce video/dvd and then be able to compress it so I would get several hours of video on to one dvd disc.What is the standerd used for video compression is it mpeg 4 ????.Do I need in extra hardware? and can anybody recommend suitable software (I dont want to spend 100's of £££££)

For standard play,reasonable quality, about 2 hours per 4.7gb disc.

You will need a method of capture. Varies with your equipment owned/source of video.

An editing programme.

An authoring/burning programme.

A DVD burner.

Have a read on the site given above then come back if further info required.
