Video on screen to file

Is there software that will take what is currently showing on the screen and save it as a file. Rather like recording a TV program to play later or to burn onto DVD.
The videos I want to copy are free on the internet.
As a very hard up English pensioner, I am particularly interested in free software!

Can you tell me which of the many found by Google you recommend?

PS: the videos are NOT from Youtube

I use this one, bottom right of page, think you get about 30 free goes then a very small cost to keep using it if I remember right.

Otherwise for free you could try Windows Media Encoder 9 from microsoft, saves as a WMV file type, quality mightn't be as good as the Free Screen Recorder from nbxsoft.
