video file onto a dvd compression?

hi ive got a video file i want to burn onto a dvd but it wont fit, its supposed to be a 777ish mb file and the disk shud b 4.7 gb i think but it says the files too big. im confused. any idea how i can make this file fit? do i need to compress it or something???

What software are you using?

If it's Nero you need to select the disk type before adding the files, you may still have the software set to CD, in which case a 777mb file would be too big to fit on a CD. The software will not auto detect the type of disc inserted.
