Video editing via USB2

A friend has an Acer AS3003WLMI 1 laptop & wishes to do some basic video editing but the unit doesn’t have a Firewire connection.
1. Is it possible to edit via the USB2 connection?
2. If Firewire is neede is it possible to install a Firewire card externally?

As USB2 caters for 480 Mbps and standard Firewire 400 Mbps, I would guess so but have not done so personally.
