Video to DVD

For some time I have been attempting to transfer my home video's to DVD via my computer, but so far without success due to hardware/software let downs. I started a month or so ago, by purchasing VHS to DVD 2.0 De Luxe. This was a complete failure, as not only were the copied video's much worse to view than the original tape, I had to uninstall the software and reinstall it on a daily basis for it to work at all. Has anyone out there attempted to carry out this task, and if successful what video capture device and software did you use. Also if anyone knows of an U.K. internet forum which deals with this sort of query, please let me know.
Many thanks to all who offer advice.

Personally the way I go is get a dvd recorder get your tapes on to dvd then if you want to edit you can just put the dvd in the pc and with suitable software edit add menus tittles whatever and reburn to dvd.

I had reasonably good results with the Belkin High Speed DVD creator. This comes with U-Lead Video studio software.

A DVD recorder is more expensive but is less hassle.
