well ,you would decode a video file from ::AVI to MPEG etc

and some players ie real and win player may not be able to read some of the codes (ie the stuff the player reads to give you a picture)on some types of format, so you need a decoder, or a different player i have 7 different players as stuff downloaded from one countries tv may not work on someone elses,there are many different formats, I use 1)real player. 2) windows media player. 3)nero showtime. (for dvd's) 4)divx player. 5)web ex recorder & player. 6)cliprex dvd (although this is being deleted soon) 7)nero media player
