Is there a convenient place on the net where we can go to find out if a video card in question is compatible with our motherboard?

Motherboards come (mostly) with one of two types of slots for graphics cards.

AGP - older motherboards

PCI-E - newer motherboards

Once you know what slot is on your motherboard you can then choose the graphics card to suite.

If you do not know the make / model of the motherboard use a program like click here to find out.
