Video card for Dell system?

  Sea Urchin 09:19 06 Dec 09

My neighbour has a Dell Dimension 4700 PC with onboard graphics - but would like to fit a separate card. Does anybody have any suggestions for a suitable card for this Dell system?

you need to establish whether there is a slot for an additional graphics card? If there is what type it is ie pci-express or the old agp. If it does not have a graphics card slot you will need to try and find a graphics card that fits in an ordinary pci slot. You really either need to look at its manual or go to the dell site and download the manual for it.

Thanks howard64 - yes it has the following:

Two PCI card slots

One PCI Express x16 card slot

One PCI Express x1 card slot

Can you tell us which CPU it has, and how much RAM it has installed? Before you buy anything, you'd be best finding out what sort of power supply it has, too, because some graphics cards use a lot of juice.

Thanks - will post again when I get the data

His best bet will be this one click here

And ask him to upgrade the RAM to at least 1GB or the best to 2 GB.

How is that card his best bet? The 8400GS is very weak by today's standards.

<<The 8400GS is very weak by today's standards>>

You're perfectly correct by saying that.

In order to run a sizeable and powerful GX card he needs to get a new PSU, more RAMs and maybe a new case as well as cooling fans.

But I doubt anyone who owns a system of 4-5 years old would like to spend over £200 to upgrade.

I won't ,maybe you will?

Technical specs click here

No need to spend £200. Or even £100. After looking at that spec., I would opt for a £50 Radeon 4670, and keep the existing 305 Watt PSU.

Thank you for continuing the debate in my absence.

Hercule - following your suggestion would this be a suitable purchase to make?
