video capture on my laptop

having problems capturing video. Compaq evo 1.6mhz AMD XP processor, 40gb hard drive (virtually empty). Tried movie maker, dazzle, currently trying pinnacle studio 8. The test on pinnacle is saying my hard drive write rate is below the 4000 k/s required. I've done the suggested checks to the ide bus settings (?) as per pinnacle website advice, but no change. don't think problem is with link to camera (cardbus firewire adapter).
Help me to get started with boring my friends and neighbours with home movies.

What probs did you have with the 1st 2? Dazzle is notoriously buggy and MM is limited, plus S8 has a few bugs. This is a free dv editor which is bug free click here

To cut down on errors turn off all non-vital b/ground progs (av, firewall, system restore etc) on capture. I use Enditall click here

Also make sure DMA is enabled on drives.
