Currently I have a Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS graphics card and a 19 inch TFT monitor. It is connected with a DVI cable. I want to buy a 26 inch monitor which has VGA/DVI/HDMI input connectors. What are the advantages of HDMI input over DVI over VGA please because I'm horribly confused. I thought HDMI was for digital television.

dvi is the pure digital form of video for the older vga your pc has to convert from digital to analogue pass the info to the monitor which then puts it back to digital. With dvi nothing get altered the signal is passed straight to the monitor in digital form. HDMI appears to be the latest form and is more for hd tv than anything else

Many thanks for your reply.
So what you are saying is that DVI connection is preferable to a VGA connection and that a HDMI connection will offer nothing over the DVI connection for viewing general computing?
Many thanks

DVI over VGA = yes
HDMI if you have a Blue Ray drive to receive hd quality.

DVI is more than good enough for general computing.

Many thanks howard64 and skidzy. I am now unconfused and will use DVI.
Thanks again
