VERY slow laptop

  palinka 17:32 14 Jul 09

Acer Aspire 1310 Laptop, about 5 or 6 yrs old; processor has 1.65 Gh AMD Athlon; 224 MB in DRAM slot 1; nothing in DRAM slot 2.
Win XP home & SP1&2
MS Office; AVG Free v8.5

Only ever used much for a 6mth period between desktops. Now little used – chiefly to produce a church magazine once a month in MS Publisher; always deleted after printing. Problem is that it’s become VERY slow.
Not normally used for Internet or email, though shares a broadband connection with my desktop. I’ve deleted all temp files, run disk cleanup and defragged (though it says no need to defrag this volume) but this makes no difference.

Today I had a message saying the “virtual memory was too low” and it needed to “increase the size of the virtual memory paging file”, but I had to go out at that point & couldn’t leave it running.

Any advice, please?
