Very long boot-up time with WindowsXP Pro

Any tips for reducing the boot-up time for XP Pro very welcome! It is taking a minimum of 2 mins 45 secs to boot up on a newly formatted 20GB HD. I use a 1GHz Athlon and 512MB RAM. Was using XP Home OK and boot-up was about 45secs. New install of XP Pro and boot-up is OK till the initial boot screen info - then all quiet - no HD activity at all for about a minute. Then the welcome screen and about 45 secs till a stable desktop screen. All else appears OK. Shut down is quick at about 12 secs.
Thanks - leckers

Most of the time spent is looking for hardware so if you have several USB items try removing them and see if it is any better.
