very dark display on images and movies

I have an AMD Athlon XP 1600 with 512mb memory and a Nvidia Geforce2 MX 100/200 video card.

If I am running normal text based programmes such as a word processor or spread sheet or looking at a web page everything is great. However images and videos are very dark. A dark looking image prints perfectly and an image that looks great on my camera display is very dark on the screen.

The Advanced section of Display properties has a set of Overlay Controls but these are greyed out unless I have a video running when I can use them to adjust the britness to an acceptable level. However as soon as the video stops the controls return to default and are once again greyed out.

Any ideas? If I change the video card do you think this will go away?

It's possible that it would go away, but there are more options you could try first.

Try updating the drivers for the card. Get the detonators from click here.
