Very basic PC for Father-in-law.........

Hi, I thought my FIL (in his 80's) might enjoy the wonders of the web so I thought I'd see about a PC for him to try out. It would be for VERY basic use, web and email and definitely not for anything else.

I thought of an Acer Aspire Revo but as it's just to 'try out' I was looking at spending the absolute minimum at the moment. A laptop screen would be too small so a netbook/laptop is not an option. His HD TV has VGA input.

As the PC would be just for the web, would I be better off getting a cheap second hand base unit and run Ubuntu on it.

Thanks for any advice,

Yes, I would go for a second hand PC with XP. Would add a fairly large flat screen monitor.

Thanks for the replies.

I have all the bits (leads, cables, keyboard etc)and he would be able to use the TV for a monitor.

After a bit more looking it might be worth a gamble with a cheap oldie on eBay.

Or check the sales in your local paper - at least you can see if it works before paying?

Try freecycle, sometimes there are old ones being given away.
