probably a really stupid question, but can you put VCD complaint MPEGs on a DVDR for playback in a standalone dvd player, or can yu only use DVDRs to create actual DVDs?

IE, can you use DVDr to make VCDs like you do with CDr?

You can burn mpeg2 and avi to dvd, but not mpeg1 (which is for cd's).

BTW There's no such thing as a silly question.

... but a VCD can probably be read by your domestic DVD player if it's a modern one, so no need to burn the files onto a DVD -- just use a CD-R and select the "create a VCD" option in your burner software.

However, MPEG2 files on a DVD do give better quality.
