Vaio with harddisk problem

My Vaio PCG-VX71P (~2,000 pounds, year 2002)crashed some time ago. This Vaio came with recovery software in four CDs.

I used the first CD and a message popped up:

Disk Access: Sense Operational failed. Cannot normally finish recovery.

I have tried to reformat the partitions but a message said that the harddisk maybe damaged. So I am unable to do this.

Does someone has similar experience? How much will charge Sony UK for repairing the laptop? What is the best advice?

Buying a new hard disk may be the best way forward.

Do you have an XP CD with which to boot the laptop and try to format / partition the drive that way?

Yes I tried with XP CD and other software (e.g. Partition Commander, VCOM)and the formatting cannot be done. It said disk may be damaged.

Probably best then to get a new disk; if under waranty, contack the vendor.
