Is there a utility that when installed on my PC I can trace (ping)an IP address and have it give me it's machine or PC name on the LAN?
I thought tracert might do it but for the IP addresses I am trying to track down it does not.

nbtstat -c

Programs like this click here can be handy too

The nbtstst -c did not work although I know it should and the utility did what it should but the mystery IP addresses on our network are still that, a mystery.

Thank You.

Office network? In a workgroup rather than a domain? How many mystery addresses?

If you use ipconfig /all from a dos prompt it will give you a lot of info including the mac address of each unit connected. From the mac address ou might be able investigate further

NET VIEW from command prompt should list all connected device names
