Using a USB port on a laptop to connect a serial

I hope I can explain this properly. I have an automated gate that is opened by mobile phone. To configure the module I need to use a special lead that has a female RS232 socket at one end and a telephone RJ45 at the other. So far so good but my latop has no serial port. I remember reading about using an usb serial adapter and found this one. It is usb to male rs232 but when I plug the female bit in will it be ok?? Or is there a better option?
