Using laptop monitor on a desktop?

Hello can anyone out there help me?
A friend has given me his desktop to 'have a look at' as it seems to be running very slow, however unfortunately he has not given me the monitor. Is there any way I can use the monitor of my laptop to view his hard drive?

Help me please, I promised to get this this sorted this weekend!

Im trying to find out this myself.
I would have thought there would have been some way to do it.

Seem to recall reading somewhere that it can't be done. You can use an external monitor for your laptop, if the TFT is kaput. But not the other way round.
