Using an Internal Hard Drive as USB External

I have a seagate ide 120gb hard drive from my old computer that I am tempted to use as a USB external drive on my main computer.

I have read numerous reports on these caddy's/enclosures/external disk cases.

My question. Is it really as easy as placing this drive in one of these, attaching the cables and pluging this into a USB port on my box. I run XP home/SP2. Will this be recognised as an external storage device that I can immediately reformat?

thanks in advance
