Using DVD ReWriters

Can anyone advise on what can & can't be done on a DVD rewriter. It seems that there's a problem with adding data after the first burn to a DVD write only disk. Also, it seems that you can't add a DVD video after the first burn to disk. It seems that the whole process is much less flexible that CD writing. Does anyone know where to go for advice on what can be done, how to do it and what the limitations are.

Scrivers, I'm new to this recording onto CD's. I can't even get the hang of CD-RW's totally confused. But refusing to give up I treated myself to 3 DVD-RAM 4.7gb rewritable discs which I save video, stills, text etc its just like having an addition to your hard drive. Expensive though, worth a mention..Lap..
