How do I tell if I have USB 1 or 2. are USB 2 devices backwards or forwards compatible?

USB2 is backward compatable to USB 1.1.
Can you give some details of your comp and which OS you are using.

if you go into device manager under universal serial bus controllers it should tell you whats installed.usb 2 is backward compatible you can plug usb 1 stuff into it and it will work.you can i think plug usb2 stuff into ubs1 ports aswell but remember the slowest speed will be what you get in both cases.darren

If you are using xp and a usb 2 device and try to plug the device in to a usb 1 port an information window will appear saying "HI SPEED USB Device Plugged into non-HI-SPPED USB Hub" It works but as already mentioned at the much slower speed

I am running Windows XP Home. When I go to Device Manager and look at USB controllers it does not tell me if they are USB 1 or USB 2. I think they are USB 2 but how can I tell for sure?
