I have usb ports but they are not usb2.0 which is what i need. Is this a matter of just downloading software or does anybody know how i can get usb 2.0. thanks

You can install a USB2 PCI card - if your motherboard only supports USB1.1 on board, that is all you will get without the aforementioned card.
Something like this; click here

Depends on your setup; if you have a desktop PC and a spare PCI slot, you can add a PCI card such as click here

You may fit a USB card in a spare PCI slot, however if your USB equipment (scanner / printer etc), is more than a few years old it will not run any faster, although USB Hard drives should.

It may just be a matter of installing USB 2 drivers
