USB2 External Drive Recognition in Device Manager

  jgd 22:29 10 Feb 04

A recently acquired 40GB Drive in a USB2 Enclosure only shows as

?(in yellow) USB Device

in the Device Manager Listing, below the

USB 2.00 Root Hub line.

I have not been able to install any driver from the accompanying CD although have found what appears to be the install file on the CD.

Does the above ? listing imply that the drive/usb interface is faulty? (Or is this merely because I have not been able to install the driver?)

Infrared & Cameras using ports on the same ALi USB2 PCI card identify & operate fine. All under W98.

Advice as to next steps/what I'm not doing right please.

Hi, I'm not sure that Win 98 supports USB 2. I know that XP does if SP 1 is applied. Cheers, Bill

If you use WinXP or Win2K you do not need to install drive with CD. If you have XP, you need SP1. Just my own experience: Connect USB data link first, then switch power, works for me. If I do another way around then drive is not recognised.
