Ihave installed some more memory (working fine) and windows XP on an older comp that the kids use. Problem is that now when I put anything (memory stick, joy stick etc) into the usb ports, the mouse pointer freezes and I have to shut down the comp and start again. The usb ports were working fine before I installed XP. I tried connecting them before I turn the machine on but although this stops the mouse pointer from freezing and it tells me that it has found new hardware, it reconises the item connected as an unknown device in the device manager and as such I cant access anything thats on the memory stick. all componenets in the device manager are apparently working fine. No question marks and the USB entries all say that they are working properly. I am at a loss please help.

Try right clicking on a USB entry in Device Manager and select Update Drivers.

already tried that VoG, thanks for the suggestion. The strange thing is, in device manager they are all working fine, drivers are correct etc but the thing still freezes when I use it. wondered if maybe I needed to update the motherboard bios. Its an MS6309 motherboard. Dont want to do this unless I'm sure cos I dont want to muck it up altogther.

What chipset is the motherboard Via sis or what???

  mags65 21:07 18 Sep 05

Yes it has SP2 installed and the chipset is VIA.
I have managed to download a usb patch from the Packard bell support site and think I might give that a try. Please keep suggestions coming though just in case it doesnt work

Does this help. I needed it to get my camera to work on my old computer. At least I think it was this one.
