USB Wireless LAN suddenly quits detecting signals

I was given a USB device which has been faultless in operation, but earlier tonite it has suddenly become deaf to the presense of the router.Any ideas on checking it to find out if it can be fixed(its not important to get it working,as a replacement can be had for approx £10)I'm just curious to know why it would suddenly quit.I have tried it on two PC's,and shoved the laptop in the car and had a drive around. The areas I had pinpointed as recently as yesterday, having a signal, are all now not detected.

Sounds like it failed alright but why?

Strange one...

Not to worry, there's a PC fair tommorow so I will buy a replacement. It just bugs me as to why it quit,it wasn't dropped, knocked,or abused in any form.It quite simply just decided to cease working.
