What's the physical difference between USB & USB2 cables? Are the number of pins different and are different voltages involved?

Everything is exactly the same regarding physical appearance. You can use USB 1.0 in USB 2.0 ports and vice versa.

Only difference is speed. A USB 2.0 device needs a USB 2.0 port to runa t full speed otherwise, it just runs at normal USB 1.0 speed in a normal port.
