USB-powered external hard drive question

  Pineman100 11:18 24 Oct 08

I'm about to order a little Seagate external hard drive for a friend to use as a backup drive. It's powered from the USB port, and is a USB 2 unit.

However, my friend's computer has only USB 1 ports. I know that data exchange won't be a problem (although a bit slow) but will a USB 1 port be OK to power the drive?

Yes power output for USB1 or 2 is 5v and a max of 500mA per hub

This is what you need to update your computer for USB 2 devices.

Fruit Bat /\0/\ - in which case all will be fine. Many thanks.

Terry - that's a helpful suggestion. But in all honesty I'm just helping out a friend, and I don't really want to get into installing a new card for her. She's a long way away, and not able to do it herself.

However, question answered. Thanks again to you both.
