I had a nasty virus on my pc which i thought i had sucessfully removed, however when i plug my scanner or camera into the USB port the pc shuts down and when i reboot i get the black screen with options to start windows normally, last known configuration etc etc. I have followed all windows messages to rectify the problem but nothing is working and its driving me insane!
Please help someone, anybody?!

If you have a XP CD, not a Restore CD. put it in the drive and stop it loading. Then type in run box

SFC /SCANNOW note space before / then press enter

However i have a newer version of Windows XP due to updates and service pack 3 installed now. The original version is just the basic XP home edition.
I have also tried system restore but that wont work at all.

When it stops and asks for CD press enter it will move on. its the SP updates that does it

You should also check if USB ports are Enabled in the Bios (if this is a feature).

Could be worth running ChkDsk (My Computer>Explore>C drive>highlight>Properties>Tools>Error Checking button.

If you OK this you then need to reboot to allow ChkDsk to run.

I had a nasty virus on my pc, I think this is the problem.

Do you have a full Operating CD, If so you may need to do a Repair
