USB port mis-identifying & Power supply

This is just for interest as I have spent some time trying to find why some ports appear to support USB2 & some only 1. I have a Tiny(!)with a FIC P4m-915G mobo, spec says 8 USB supporting USB1 & 2. I have a powered USB2 Hub + built in card reader etc. When I plug another USB2 device into a free port it warns that a better transfer speed is obtainable on USB2. If I plug the hub into the same port & then the other USB2 device into it, bliss. My take on this is that the power cosumption is affecting the detection of USB2 - the device has the obligatory bright blue LED frittering away power. Moral of the story - get a powered hub.
