USB - Parallel printer/scanner connection

Just bought a new laptop without a parallel port so I bought a USB to parallel lead (supposed to be bi-directional) to use my (old!) canon BJC-80 printer. After some mucking about the printer now works Ok but when I put the scanner cartridge into the printer, the computer comes up with "cannot communicate with scanner" error.
Anyone any ideas please.................?

That could be an SP2 issue - there were numerous problems with scanners after users installed SP2. See if Canon have an update on their website although, with the BJC-80 being fairly old now, it would probably need to be a generic update rather than a model-specific one.

Thanks for that, I have sent an email to canon but am not holding my breath.
There was a mention of an SP2 problem on their website though..............
