is there any way to connect a USB device to a parallel port? if not how much would it cost to get a USB port fitted to a desktop?

If you have a spare pci slot then you can buy a card reasonably cheap,see here

Spend a few pounds more and get a branded one - Belkin the like - see the negative comments if youre not using WinXP/2000.

Do a search on amazon or similar for ... usb pci card ... lots to choose from.
