Stupid me opened an attachment of an email from an unknown source. Avast detected virus but when computer restarted USB mouse will not work.

ANy suggestions will be appreciated. I've learned from this mistake!

Or, a System Restore back to before you clicked!!

.. how can you get to that without the mouse?

Is there anything in the initial Setup (usually accessed by pressing a key such as DEL immediately you switch on) which may need to be altered. I did access Setup and restored the default settings

Try under Integrated Peripherals

System restore will have no effect if changes hve been made in the BIOS.

... I'll have to go back to the computer in question and check that out! I'll let you know how I get on.

Buy a cheap PS2 mouse if you do not know how to Use Keyboard to do this. PS2 mouse should be plugged in before you switch on computer, if not you will damage the motherboard.

Right click My Computer\Properties\Hardware\Device Manager if a USB or Hid Mouse is in the above uninstall it, then remove the usb mouse go to Control Panel\Add New Hardware Wizard run it and let it find the USB mouse This will be set as a HID compliant mouse./ Reset Computer. It should now work
