USB Microphone too quiet

I have a good Logitech USB microphone. No matter what adjustment I make and whether the mike is on the desk or an inch from my lips, the sound is quiet and somewhat muffled. Volume controls at the to0p or bottome have no effect.
When I had a mike that plugged in the round microphone socket or when I connect a tape recorder via the same socket, there is no problem.
Is there some sort of USB setting I can adjust?

Mine is just the opposite.
My Logitec Mic is considerably better than the one on my webcam which plugs in the Mic socket.

I already had a Skype phone plugged into a USB port. I guess that the computer was taking input from this and, because it is stored in a pouch, the sound was quiet and muffled. Removed this phone & all is well. Skype automatically accepted the new mike
