USB hubs

Why do the instructions for some USB2 equipments tell me not to connect via a hub, or to use only a hub which is approved by the equipment manufacturer? What's the difference between a primary port and a hub port?

It may refer to powered / unpowered hubs. Some peripherals will need their own power supply if they are plugged in to an unpowered hub.

some hubs come with an external power supply and others pick up the power from the pc. If the device being plugged in needs a lot of power then it needs a powered hub.

Thanks, both. The multi-function device and the scanner which had the comment in their instuctions have their own PSUs so they shouldn't be worried. I didn't find anything in the FAQs. I'll see if I can get any info from one of the suppliers.
