USB hub - powered or not?

I have run out of USB ports on the back of my PC. Am going to buy a USB hub, but don't know if I need to get a powered one or not.

I plan to plug all the less used USB devices into the hub, to leave the frequently used devices plugged directly into the PC. Of the less used devices, several (scanner, steering wheel, camera docking station) are mains powered so the USB connection only works when they are switched on - do I need to get a powered USB hub??

Reason I am asking is that I could do without another power cable to find a socket for.....

you don't need to buy a powered hub, but it is useful for those devices that draw their power from the usb connection.
