I have a WD external USB drive containing a WD800UE HDD of 80GB capacity. My XP computer has stopped recognising the drive in either My Computer or under Disk Management. The drive is still live, the drive light is on and I can here a clicking sound. Is this a terminal fault or can anyone suggest a resolution?

The drive is still live, the drive light is on and I can here a clicking sound.

Sounds nasty, like read heads hitting the platters.

Is the drive sHowning in device manager need to determine first if its drive or USB problem.

The drive isn't showing in Device Manger under Disk Drives and the USB Hub seems OK as other devices are working correctly. I fear you are correct about the drives heads and platter!

I've tried it on another PC and the same problem occurs. So I think it's time to bin the drive.

Make sure it still isn't under warranty (Usually 2 years) they are excellent at replacing defunct HD's

Many thanks. I'm sure it's out of warranty but maybe I'll give then a ring.
