USB drive letter assignment

Each time I plug in my USB RAM drive my XP chooses a letter to assign it - but it chooses a letter that is already in use as a mapped network drive. How can a set either Z or a free drive letter to be used?

I prefer to move the drive letter of the CD or DVD drive to an unused letter further up the alphabet. As this is a fixed drive it remains constant. That then leaves a free drive letter after the hard drives and before the network drives that can be taken by any USB drives I plug in.

Thanks for the advice.
