USB drive files not recognised by win 2000

I use my 128 MB USB drive without problems on my laptop (win xp home) but at work, where my computer runs win 2000, although the drive itself shows up as "E:\", the files on it don't show up. Properties correctly show: used 28 MB, empty space 100MB but 0 items. If I try to copy anything on to the drive (even 1 KB), it says there is insufficient memory. Does anyone have any ideas?

I tried re-formatting the drive which has apparently removed the files taking up the space but now, if I try to write anything to the drive, it says it is write protected. However, this particular drive does not have a write protection switch.
Thanks in anticipation for any ideas.
