I am just about to receive a new digital camera. Should my USB ports be active and 'ready', or is there a possibility that they may be disabled in 'startup'bios' etc.?

They are usually ready and waiting on a reasonably up to date machine. If there are any problems of activating them, it's not difficult to do this. If you want guidance, there is sure to be someone here to help.

If you go to control panel \ system \device manager and scroll down to the bottom. You should see a setting for usb, open this up.

If there is no setting for this then you will probably have to enter the bios to activate the usb. If this is the case post back and there will be lots of people who can walk you through it.

good luck.
