usb 2 problem

  drcmunro 22:02 10 Aug 04

i use a laptop with 2 usb2 ports, one of which is connected to a usb2 cd-rw drive. Recently the drive has been misbehaving - switching itself on & off every few seconds, plus producing an error message - "hi-speed usb device plugged into non-hi-speed usb hub". The ports are built in, by the way, not on an external hub. Is this a problem with the drive, the usb port or both? Any ideas how to fix this one?

Presumably you know your laptop's USB drives are definitely USB 2 and not USB 1?

The external CD-R drive switching itself on and off would imply a loose connection. With the amount of power drawn by a CD-R drive, I would personally go for a powered USB hub to plug the CD-R drive into, instead of just directly into your laptop.

For a XP computer if you have a XP disc, Not a Restore Disc. Go to Start\Run and type

SFC /SCANNOW press enter
