Is it possible to replace a Pentium 4 1.6 processor with any other make of processor or will I have to use a Pentium.

it will have to be another pentium 4 as this is the type of socket your motherboard uses, its called 'socket 478'

do you know the make and model of your motherboard? this will help to find out what p4 processor you can upgrade too.

ps. if you dont know the make and model of the motherboard then download everest home edition from click here

install it and click on 'computer' then 'summary' and look at the information for 'motherboard name' then tell us or look it up on the manufacturers website, you may get a link in everest that takes you to the site.

I agree with huggyg71 that you should find out the motherboard model. Particularly important in your case as the current CPU is P4 1.6Hz, which can be socket 478 or even socket 423 (depending on how long ago you bought the system).

click here MSI website says it will support " 1.3 ~ 2.6GHz and up ", whatever 'and up' means. click here for a download link for a manual.
Looks like a 2.4 click here should be OK with the potential to go even faster, dependant on what they mean by 'and up', may mean with BIOS updates, read the manual see if it gives more details.

Seems my link to the P4 Prescott was incorrect, needs to be a P4 Northwood with a 400 fsb, learn something new every day. My apologies to ferndene for posting duff info.
