Upgrading Hard Disk - how large can I go

The 148GB HDD on my Dell is struggling with the ever growing Digital photo/Music/Video demands placed on it and we want to add a second hard drive. The drive will not be used to run Applications, just as a data store. The question is how big a drive can I install without problems - is there a maximum XP (SP1) can support without recourse to partitioning. File system is NTFS.

I installed a 300GB hard drive as a slave, but I am thinking of getting a second 300GB to replace my C: drive. But I have SP2 installed for XP Pro.
