hi i own a dell 3100 with a intel p4 processor im just wondering if an intel dual core would fit in the p4 socket or would i have to start thinking of changing motherboards wich i dont want to get into

Yes and no. Yes, it uses a L775 "land package" (don't ask) socket fitting, but dual core CPUs need compatible chipsets. Off hand, I can't remember which chipsets are compatible, but certainly most of those which ran the P4s are not compatible. I have a P4 650 (3.4Ghz) with whatever chipset was top of the range two-and-a-bit years ago and I know for certain that it is not compatible.
